BROWN RACES MATCO DRAGSTER TO QUARTERFINALS AT BRISTOL
News From David Powers Motorsports
BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 18, 2008)
Antron Brown drove his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to a quarterfinal finish Sunday afternoon at Bristol Dragway. The two-time Top Fuel winner remains second in the NHRA Top Fuel standings.
Facing off against Morgan Lucas for the first time this season, two of the sports quick leavers used nearly identical reaction times at the start. Both dragsters shook the tires early, but Brown recovered in the Matco Tools/iLocate GPS rail and sped to a run of 4.901 seconds at 321.12 mph. Lucas’ dragster didn’t recover and slowed to a run of 7.892 seconds. With the win, Brown and Tony Schumacher remain the only two drivers to have advanced passed the opening round at each race this season.
Following a lengthy rain delay due to afternoon rain sprinkles, Brown was paired up against third-year Top Fuel racer Hillary Will. Brown used a narrow starting line advantage in the Matco Tools/Valvoline rail and Lee Beard horsepower to clock a run of 4.560 at 328.14, but it wasn’t enough as Will clocked a pass of 4.541 at 319.14 in her black dragster to score the trip to the semifinals. Brown now has an elimination record of 16-6 in eight races this season with three final round appearances and two wins (Houston and Atlanta).
“We caught a bit of a break in the first round when I had to pedal the car,” Brown said. “I saw some good numbers on the board and I really didn’t expect to have to pedal the car, but we got by the first round again. In the second round Lee (Beard) and the Matco team did a great job of putting a good tune-up in the car. We just lost a close race. We’ll head to Topeka and try and go back to winning some rounds in the Matco Tools dragster.”
The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 20th annual O’Reilly Summer Nationals, May 30-June 1, at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan. Brown’s teammate, Rod Fuller, qualified ninth this weekend at Bristol and was defeated in the first round. He ranks fourth in the Top Fuel standing with one win this season (St. Louis).
