TRG Set to Defend Podium Results at Daytona with Four Entries
TRG
PETALUMA, CA, July 1, 2008
The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 returns to Daytona International Speedway this week for the annual Brumos Porsche 250 and TRG will be looking to once again visit the podium at the "World Center of Racing."
In the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, TRG placed two cars on the podium and a third car finished in fourth place. TRG will field a total of four cars in Thursday night's race under the lights in Daytona and will be looking for its first victory of the 2008 season.
"Daytona is clearly the most important track on the Rolex Series schedule and also the one where I feel we have our best chance for success," said TRG owner Kevin Buckler. "Our team has always run well there and it has historically been a 'Porsche friendly' circuit, so I expect we'll definitely be in the mix for the victory. We've got four stellar driver lineups and four great cars."
TRG's two full-time entries are both inside the top 10 in the Rolex Series GT class point standings and will be looking to improve their respective positions on Thursday night. The team's No. 67 TRG Porsche GT3 is currently fourth in the team standings and will once again feature co-drivers Tim George Jr. and Spencer Pumpelly.
The No. 67 team has had a rough go of it for the last few races, but George and Pumpelly were integral parts of the team's third-place performance in the Rolex 24 and could get their season back on track in the Brumos Porsche 250.
With 188 points, George currently leads the MESCO Building for the Future Rookie of the Year Award. He is six points ahead of second-place Lawson Aschenbach and 11 markers in front of TRG teammate Ted Ballou, in addition to leading former Formula 1 driver Ricardo Zonta and ex-NASCAR racer Bill Lester among others. George and Ballou are also second and third, respectively, in the Bob Akin Award standings for the top sportsman driver in the GT class.
Ballou will once again share the No. 66 Mitchell Rubber Porsche GT3 with multi-time Rolex Series champion Andy Lally in the Brumos Porsche 250. The duo helped to lead the charge for TRG in January's Rolex 24 At Daytona with a second-place performance, and should rate among the favorites to score the GT class victory on Thursday night.
Bryan Sellers and RJ Valentine will again share the No. 68 CRG/Maxter/Rotax/MBA Group/F1 Air Porsche GT3 in Daytona. Sellers was also part of the third-place-finishing No. 67 team in the season-opening Rolex 24, while Valentine came home fourth in the race sharing another TRG entry.
The team from the TRG camp that seems to be carrying the most momentum into the Daytona sprint race is the No. 65 Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing/Total-R Insulation Solutions Porsche GT3 program for TRG/Riegel Autosport. Co-driving the No. 65 Porsche will again be Hima Maher, who got his first taste of the Daytona road course with TRG earlier this year in the Rolex 24, and 2005 Rolex Series GT champion Craig Stanton.
Since the program ramped-up prior to May's Monterey Festival of Speed at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the No. 65 team has finished inside the top 10 in three of its four races, including a season-best result of fifth by co-drivers Stanton and Josemanuel Gutierrez in the most recent round at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
All on-track activities for the Brumos Porsche 250 will take place on Thursday, July 3, beginning with a series of practice sessions from 10:00 a.m. through 12:55 p.m. ET. The 15-minute qualifying session for the GT class will run from 1:15 to 1:30 p.m. with an autograph session slated for 5:00 p.m.
The green flag is scheduled to drop on the Brumos Porsche 250 at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday night. The race will be televised live on SPEED beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET and live Timing & Scoring data from all on-track sessions will also be available on www.grand-am.com.
TRG was founded in 1993 and has been competing at the top level of sports car racing ever since. The team has the most wins of any team in the Grand-Am Rolex Series with 23, including the 2005 and 2006 Rolex Series GT championship trophy to go along with wins at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours or Le Mans.
TRG is a manufacturer and distributor of high-performance racing parts. The group specializes in engine and chassis building as well as full service professional race car preparation. The company also provides electrical and mechanical engineering services, driver development and arrive-and-drive opportunities. TRG is based in Petaluma, Calif., near its home track of Infineon Raceway in Sonoma as well as its new facility in Charlotte.
