Waldvogel Battles Back onto the Podium in Bark River

Waldvogel Off-Road Race team
Fond du Lac, WI, July 16, 2008

The Waldvogel Off-Road Race team returned to action over the past weekend at the Bark River International Off-Road Raceway for the 33rd annual Boss Snowplows/Island Resort Casino Off-Road Challenge. This was the team’s first visit to Bark River during Dave’s rookie campaign in the Pro-2WD division. Dave has had some success at Bark River in the past, winning several events in the Stock Truck class, and scoring three podium finishes in four races last season in the Super Truck division. With that experience in hand, the Waldvogel crew looked to attack the 1.5 mile course and bounce back from their first DNF in two seasons, which occurred in Crandon just three weeks earlier in Round 4 of competition.

Round 5 saw Dave and his Bendix® Brakes/Toyo Tires Pro-2WD truck launch into the 2nd position at the drop of the green flag. Hot in pursuit were veteran racers Kevin Probst and Evan Evans. Dave battled with both Probst and Evans over the next several laps, allowing another veteran, Dan VandenHeuvel, to take a large lead over the field. Dave was racing in 3rd place late in the race, and held off a challenge from the only female competitor in the Pro-2wd class, Rhonda Konitzer, who returned to action for the first time in 2008. Dave finished on the podium in 3rd place for the second time in his rookie season in the class. VandenHeuvel took his first win of the season, and Evan Evans got onto the podium for the first time in 2008, finishing 2nd.

Round 6 looked a lot the same at the start, this time with Dave pulling into second position behind Ross Hoek off the land rush start. The Bendix Brakes/Toyo Tires truck has been quick off the line every race so far this season. The leaders were in a tight pack of five trucks over the first few laps, when a slip in the cemetery turn forced the Bendix truck into the wrong direction. Dave was unable to make up the lost ground to the leaders after his spin on the very slick track, and held on for a 5th place finish to round out the weekend.

After the races, Dave commented:

“We are really happy to get back on the podium this weekend. The competition in this class is really tight, and any podium finish is tough to get. I made a few mistakes in Sunday’s race that cost us a few positions, but all I can do is learn from that and come back to battle again another day. We are still learning every time we come to the track in this new division. The truck continues to perform well and we continue to finish races. We are really looking forward to the second half of the season…”

With another consistent weekend, Dave continues to hold the 3rd position in season points in the WSORR Pro-2WD division. The WSORR season is exactly half complete now, with six of 12 rounds in the books. The second half of the season will kick off next weekend, July 25th & 26th, under the lights at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway in Oshkosh, WI.
