DOWN TO THE WIRE

The 2008 Formula Renault UK Championship will be decided in three weeks time at Brands Hatch. CR Scuderia’s Adam Christodoulou finished race one at Silverstone this morning in a strong second place but was forced to retire from race two after being hit at the first corner.

“I was alongside Jordan Oakes going into turn one,” said Adam. “He veered across and hit my front wheel, spinning me around in front of everyone. I was hoping the car was undamaged but the steering rack was broken and all I could do was go straight on at the next corner and then become a spectator!”

Scott Jenkins got the best result for the team in race two, finishing in seventh position after a fairly uneventful race for the youngest of the CRS drivers.

“That was my first ever start in the wet,” said Scott after race two. “I sat there for a while with the wheels spinning and lost a couple of places but I took one back at turn one. I had a pretty steady race after that. No real dramas, apart from when I got a bit sideways at one point, but I was never in any danger of going off.”

It was Ryuji Yamamoto who provided the drama in race two. The Japanese driver started from ninth on the grid and came around at the end of lap one in second place. Once the race settled down he was running strongly in third and it wasn’t until two laps before the end that this changed. Ryuji lost third place to Dean Stoneman, but just at that moment the driver in second went off so Ryuji kept third. Unfortunately he then outbraked himself on the penultimate lap and was only able to finish 11th after rejoining the race.

“My start was great,” said Ryuji. “I made a big jump up the order. My race pace was okay but I was under quite a lot of pressure. I outbraked myself at the end which is a shame but it was good to be running at the front again.”

Jesse Krohn learnt a lot about front end downforce this afternoon when he lost his front wing at the first corner. He managed to run in sixth place for a long time with his hobbled car but in the later stages of the race he started to lose ground before finishing in 12th place.

“I got a mega start,” said Jesse. “I passed four or five cars but then suddenly the guy in front was almost stopped so I had no where to go and I hit him, losing my wing. The car didn’t feel too bad at first but as soon as the tyres start to come up to temperature it becomes harder to control without the front downforce so I was fighting massive understeer.”

The final two rounds of the 2008 Formula Renault UK Championship take place at Brands Hatch on 21 September.
