Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Abbott Clinches Fifth Hare and Hound Championship in Wendover

Monster Energy Kawasaki
Irvine, Calif. (August 18, 2008)

“ Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Destry Abbott clinched his fifth-career AMA National Hare and Hound championship title during round six of the series in Wendover, Nev. Abbott needed to finish fourth or better and he was able to come across the finish inside the top-five. Teammate Josh Morros was in second until he went down and was air lifted out to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

Man of Integrity
Abbott got off to a sixth-place start and moved quickly into fourth, trailing teammate Morros who was up to second at the second alternate gas stop. Roughly five miles before the main pits, Abbott came upon Morros who had gone down.

With his title on the line, Abbott stayed with Morros and eventually rode to the highway to call 911 for help. He came back and realized he needed to get immediate help. He rode towards the main pits, saw that medics were on their way and directed them to Morros. After he was attended to, Abbott got back on his bike and continued with the race.

Bitter Sweet
The championship celebration was postponed after the race since Abbott didn’t want to be celebrating when his friend and teammate was taken from the race in critical condition.

It just felt awkward to be celebrating, said Abbott. We can always celebrate later. For now it was too hard to be thinking about that with Josh going down like that. I want him celebrating with me.

Time to Clinch
With the title ready to clinch, Abbott just needed to get fourth or better to earn the number one plate.

The course was 130 miles and I tend to like the longer races, said Abbott. Unfortunately it was really fast and had hidden rocks in a lot of the sandy sections. After the incident with Josh, I just trail rode the rest of the race and was lucky to come across in fourth, which is what I needed.

Young Gun
Morros was transported to a hospital in Salt Lake City where he will be in an induced coma until Tuesday. CAT scans are coming back better than expected and reports on his condition will be updated as received.

Time For ISDE
With a championship under his belt, Abbott will head off with teammate Ricky Dietrich to Greece for the International Six Day Enduro. Both Dietrich and Abbott were chosen to be apart of Team USA’s dream team. Racing starts September 1.
