Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Watkins Takes Home State Win in Ohio

Monster Energy Kawasaki
Irvine, Calif. (October 13, 2008)

“ Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Scott Watkins earned his first GNCC XC2 class win of the season during a dusty round 12 at Power Line Park in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Watkins battled much of the race for the lead and was able to edge out the competition on the last lap. Watkins good ride finished him in seventh overall amongst the XC1 riders and moved him up to fourth in the points standings. Teammate Andrew Matusek turned out a good ride to round out the top-10.

A Long Time Coming
Watkins had a rough start to his season when he broke his arm days before the first round. He recuperated and has consistently ridden to top-five finishes. In Ohio, it was finally his day when he came across with his first win of the season.

I had a good start and just tried to play it smart, said Watkins. It was really dusty and hot. I knew it was going to be a physically demanding race. In the hard technical stuff, I just tried to keep it on two wheels and not make mistakes. I was slowly catching people and made it to the front, going back and forth with Jason (Thomas) for most of the race.

Hometown Crowd
Since the race was only an hour from Watkins home, there were plenty of friends and family in attendance to cheer him on.

I had around 20 friends come down and they were cheering me on all around the course, said Watkins. It really makes a difference when you see your friends cheering you on.

Top-10
Matusek came around the first lap in 17th and used a majority of the race to battle his way back up to 10th.

Final Race
In two weeks, the riders will attend the last race of the year in Crawfordsville, Ind. Watkins hopes the momentum from his win this weekend carries on to the race in Indiana.

I did really well in that race last year, said Watkins. I really like the track. Its fast, bumpy, has some good hills and the occasional mud hole. I’m really looking forward to it.
