Forsberg Enters Formula DRIFT Weekend in Sonoma Atop Standings

Infineon Raceway
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2009)

Chris Forsberg enters Infineon Raceway as the driver to beat when Formula DRIFT comes to the Sonoma Valley for Round 6: Locked and Loaded, Aug. 21-22.

Formula DRIFT will be part of the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma weekend (Aug. 21-23), featuring the top IndyCar drivers in the country, including three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves, Danica Patrick, Scott Dixon and more.

Forsberg (NOS Energy/Maxxis Tires Nissan) was the class of the Formula DRIFT field this past weekend in Monroe, Wash., at Round 5: Breaking Point, taking the victory at Evergreen Speedway.

The Huntington Beach resident padded his lead in the standings; he leads entering Sonoma at 410 points and his followed by Ryan Tuerck (Gardella Racing/Mobil 1 Pontiac) at 363 and Bay Area resident Tyler McQuarrie (Falken Nissan) at 347. McQuarrie is an instructor at the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, which is based at Infineon Raceway.

What an unbelievable finish to a great weekend,” Forsberg said. “We were leading the points chase for the series and the Tires.com Triple Crown and just wanted a strong finish. We could not have asked for a better turnout this weekend.”

Forsberg was followed at Evergreen Speedway by Eric O’Sullivan (Hankook/Rockstar Subaru) and McQuarrie. Tony Brakohiapa, another instructor from the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, will also compete in Sonoma.

Formula DRIFT will run at Turns 4 and 7 in Sonoma, with main events set for Friday, Aug. 21, from 5-7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 22, from 5-8 p.m. A full-track exhibition is set for Saturday at 12:45 p.m. All times PACIFIC.

This will mark the penultimate race of the season for Formula DRIFT; the championship will be decided at the season finale in October.

Entering its sixth season, Formula DRIFT is recognized as the North American professional drifting championship (www.formulad.com). Established on the streets of Japan, drifting has evolved into a worldwide competitive sport that challenges each driver's driving ability and vehicle control.
