Hillary Will Racing Pre Race Report
Lucas Oil Sportsman Series
It's been a long time since Hillary Will has been behind the wheel of a dragster, and the 29-year-old former gymnast and collegiate springboard diver said she is extremely to be driving an A-Fuel dragster sponsored by Get Screened America in this weekend's NHRA Las Vegas Nationals. The car, owned by Tom Conway, is also backed by 702 Graphics and the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino.
As a Top Fuel driver, Will was able to score her first career victory at Topeka in 2008, becoming the 11th female to win a pro race in NHRA history. She also posted runner-up finishes at her home track in Sonoma and in Richmond that same year, and finished a career-best fourth in the Full Throttle Series point standings. She also holds the title of "fastest female" in NHRA history with speed of 334.65 mph.
"I'm really excited to be driving again, especially for Get Screened America. It's such an important thing to be promoting, especially as a woman. In this day and age, almost everyone knows someone who has suffered with or been affected by cancer. Breast cancer is something that can be screened for at home and treated if it's caught early. High blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma - the list goes on.
"It's all treatable, especially if you get screened, and I'm pleased to be a part of an organization that encourages people to take a look at their health and take care of themselves," she said.
"My mother is a registered nurse, and she was really happy when I told her I'd be working with Get Screened America. She just shared with me the story of a 28-year-old man who died from an illness that could have been treated had he been screened regularly. It's tragic, and yet, it can be prevented," Will said.
Behind the wheel of a Top Alcohol Dragster, she raced to first national event victory at Las Vegas 1in 2005 and was runner-up at two other national events in TAD, including the prestigious Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
"Driving an A-Fuel car shouldn't be much different than driving a Top Fuel car. The procedures are the same. I'm just excited to be driving again. It'd be even better if I could pull off another win here in Vegas. I've done it before, and I'd love to do it again," Will said.
