Antron Brown, a 24-time NHRA winner and driver of the Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools dragster, completed his preseason testing at Palm Beach International Raceway last week with a blistering speed of 322.11 mph. The Matco Tools team, who posted top speed of the meet 13 times in 2009, made 16 test laps at the all-concrete South Florida track in preparation for the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
"Testing went good for our DSR Matco Tools team," Brown said. "This was a true test for our team. We tried a lot of new things. We're getting adapted to how the other DSR cars run and we got a lot of good data. We're looking forward to going to Pomona (Calif.) and picking up where we left off at the Finals."
Brown clocked a slew of runs at 3.81-seconds with has top speed being 322.11 mph. The fastest run Brown posted last season was 319.75 mph at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway in May. The Matco Tools team has returned to its Brownsburg, Ind. race shop and will now gear-up for the 2010 season-opening event at Pomona. The 50th annual Winternationals are scheduled for Feb. 11-14, 2010, at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Brown has earned the No. 1 qualifying award at the Winternationals the past two seasons. He posted a runner-up finish at the 2009 season-opener before capping the season with a win at the Auto Club Finals last November.
"We made 16 laps in Florida and we learned a lot," crew chief Brian Corradi said. "We're performing as we'd like going into Pomona. We got to test a lot of things that we wanted to try last season, but didn't get to and it shows a lot of promise. We also got to shake down our new chassis and got many of the in-house DSR parts on the car and that was a goal. We're excited about the 2010 season."
Don Schumacher Racing, headquartered in Brownsburg, Ind., consists of six professional NHRA teams: The U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster driven by seven-time world champion Tony Schumacher; the FRAM dragster of Cory McClenathan, and the Matco Tools dragster of Antron Brown.
