2010 NHRA FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES
Round 3 of 23
41st annual NHRA GATORNATIONALS
Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway
GAINESVILLE, Fla. 3-12-2010

Robert Hight raced to the Funny Car lead Friday during a rain-shortened day of qualifying at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals.

Defending world champion Hight powered his Auto Club Ford Mustang to a Gainesville Raceway track-record performance of 4.060 seconds at 310.13 mph to move to the top of the 16-car qualifying order.

“A lot of guys went out there and [lost traction], but [crew chief] Jimmy Prock has got a good handle on this race car,” Hight said. “We were hurting it a little bit in Phoenix, so he decided to put a new fuel pump on it, and he was even second-guessing himself a little after we had the threatening weather and one run today. But he stuck with it, and as you can see, it ran 310. It was a flawless run. If we can get some more conditions tomorrow, maybe we can lower that a little bit because there’s a lot of other cars out there that can do that. An .06 is a great start, and it’s definitely going to stay in the top four, five.”

Tony Schumacher, Mike Edwards and Junior Pippin also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event. NHRA officials were forced to cancel one qualifying round due to persistent rains, which lasted until just past noon.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher also posted both ends of the track record in his U.S. Army dragster with a performance of 3.823 at 318.03 to pace Top Fuel qualifying.

“The track was fine, actually a lot better than what we just ran,” Schumacher said. “That was a good run, and it was fairly soft; just a nice, easy run down the racetrack. I’m kind of surprised the other cars didn’t do better. There’s probably a lot more track than they thought. It’s a good track, a good facility.”

Schumacher, a three-time winner of the historic event, still gets goosebumps when he pulls to the line for a run at The Swamp.

“This is a big race,” he said. “It’s like Indy and Pomona, the list of people who have won this one is amazing. People spend extra time and energy to win this one. I don’t know how we dig any deeper than we dig normally, but this is Gainesville. It’s an amazing place, an amazing crowd, a great track, and I just love winning this one. It’s a great trophy to put on your shelf.”

Edwards, who will face Greg Anderson tomorrow in the continuation of the weather-delayed Pro Stock eliminations from Phoenix, covered the distance in 6.610 at 208.97 in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to lead his category.

“We figured the track would be pretty good,” said defending world champ Edwards. “Of course, it rained most of the day, but when it did dry off, we had cloud cover all day, so we knew the track would be cool. So we thought the track would be pretty good, and it was.”

The Edwards-Anderson matchup will be one of four quarterfinal rounds left over from Phoenix that will be completed during tomorrow’s first qualifying session (noon). The semifinals will take place in the second qualifying round (2:45 p.m.). The two Phoenix finalists will then get an additional run tomorrow.

“[With Phoenix eliminations tomorrow], the focus does change,” Edwards said. “You’re doing two things at once. It’s different. You know, you’re qualifying but you’re also racing, so your mindset’s going to be a little different, that’s for sure. It’s going to be a little nerve-racking because if conditions change a lot, we’ll have to make a lot of changes to these cars, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Pippin led Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.959 at 190.14 on his PiranaZ Buell.

“We just threw a Hail Mary at it to be honest with you, and, by golly, she went on down the boulevard, so I guess we’ll throw more Hail Marys at her,” Pippin said. “For the first pass I’ve made since Pomona [in November], we’re really happy and surprised. It felt good. I short-shifted a couple of gears, so there’s more in it. We’ll come out tomorrow and see if we can’t get faster because I’m sure the .95 won’t stand up, but it’s the best start we’ve had.”

It is the first time Pippin has led his category since he joined the series in late 2007.

“For the last two years, we’ve really worked hard on it,” Pippin said. “We’ve had some little glitches here and there, but hopefully it’s all coming together now. It’s not because of lack of effort, I’ll tell you that.”

Results Friday after the first one of three rounds of qualifying for the 41st annual NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway, third of 23 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Qualifying will continue Saturday for Sunday's final eliminations.

It was then that the United Kingdom-based team turned its full attention on the Le Mans Prototype One (LMP1) category with intent to show its full hand in the new year. On 20 March, eight months of dedication will come to a head as drivers Paul Drayson (London/Gloucestershire, UK), Jonny Cocker (Guisborough, Yorks, UK) and Emanuele Pirro (Rome) charge the No. 8 Drayson Racing Lola Coupé with Judd Power into turn one of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season-opener at the 3.7-mile/5.9Km Sebring International Raceway.

Since making the move to the LMP1 class - the most technologically advanced sports cars in the world - Drayson Racing has held little reserve in its effort to challenge the factory efforts and more experienced privateer prototype teams. The hire of five-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Pirro is an example of the team's commitment to victory. Pirro has won the 12 Hours twice with the Audi works team and is familiar with what must be done to achieve victory in one of the harshest sports car environments on the schedule. The Italian's involvement backs-up the already strong driver pairing of Drayson and Cocker. The two Britons impressed in their first four prototype events earning two fastest race laps and the Michelin ® Green X® Challenge in the Asian Le Mans Series event at Okayama, Japan last November.

The team has also stacked the deck with its operations personnel. Pirro's pair of Sebring overall victories are added to the 2005 GT2 class victory and multiple Sebring podiums of Team Manager Dale White (Bozeman, MT, USA). A number of Drayson team members also enjoy 12 Hour class victories. Other endurance race successes are overwhelming on the family-oriented team.

Work has continued on the technical side as well. During the off-season, the Lola Coupé has undergone a massive makeover. Now swathed in new, low-drag, high-downforce bodywork from nose to tail, the Lola also enjoys substantial suspension and other detail updates to take full advantage of the re-worked Judd V10 engine. The Judd, now running on second generation E85 ethanol, will benefit from a larger air restrictor delivering an additional 50 horsepower over the 2009 unit the team won the pole position with at Okayama. Leaving no stone unturned, Drayson engineer Graham Moore (UK) joined Lola Cars engineers for extensive seven-post rig testing of the chassis at Lola's factory in England. Additionally, Michelin has continued to fine tune its Pilot Sport Racing Slick which Drayson will again utilise in 2010.

Quotes

Lady Drayson, Owner:
"When we decided last year to step up from GT2 to LMP1 we knew this would present an immense challenge to an independent family team like us. Our decision to make the switch six months before the start of the 2010 season and compete in four races in 2009 has given us the time and experience to prepare fully for the ALMS championship this year. The combination of the new, very experienced personnel joining the team, the new for 2010 Lola B10/60 race car with improved aero, Judd V10 engine optimised to run on advanced second generation fuel and Emanuele Pirro in the driving seat is a formidable combination with which to begin the new season."

Paul Drayson, Owner/Driver:
"Having raced at Sebring twice before in GT2 I'm well aware of how the first race in the ALMS championship season is also the toughest on the car and the drivers - so I'm really happy that this isn't my first race in a Le Mans Prototype! Having the experience of four races last year, and in particular the success we had in Japan, and knowing the development that has gone on since then gives me huge confidence in our potential in the ALMS championship this year. I have put a lot of work into my personal preparation and I am really looking forward to Sebring week. To be racing an LMP1 in front of the enormous, expert and enthusiastic crowd of Sebring fans will be an unforgettable experience. You can't ask for better than that!"

Jonny Cocker, Driver:
"I think the experience that we gathered as a team competing in three race weekends last year is completely invaluable. I feel confident that we, as a team, are on the pace. As a driver, I am far more comfortable with the car and in a position now to develop and drive things forward rather than purely learning. Sebring is quite a different circuit to any other. There is a real mix of fast and slow corners and the bumps really throw in another factor! I'm looking forward to applying my knowledge of the circuit and comparing how it feels to drive the Drayson Lola LMP1 car round Sebring compared to the GT2 Vantage. I can't wait to get back into the car!"

Emanuele Pirro, Driver:
"Going back in a LMP1 car is very exciting for me. When I retired from active racing I definitely underestimated the 'addiction' I have for my beloved sport! Despite the fact that my role as Audi Brand Ambassador is rewarding and fulfilling, I realised during the course of the whole last year, that I have been missing driving a fast car and it has been difficult for me. The feelings that a prototype can give you are unique. It seems like yesterday when I was driving the final laps in Laguna Seca, 2008 of what was going to be my last prototype race. I was enjoying every single meter of the race track and in the same time crying inside the helmet!"

Dale White, Team Manager:
"This has been the target since we made the decision to change classes. The 12 Hours of Sebring is a special event and we are putting everything into it. I'm really excited by the whole programme we are bringing here. Piece-by-piece we have assembled a great group and a great package to go racing. Everything we have learned at Petit, Laguna and in Japan will start to show here."
After battling morning and early afternoon rain showers, the NHRA pros took to the track for one qualifying session late Friday afternoon. Antron Brown returned to the seat of the car that he drove to the win at the 2009 Auto Club Finals at Pomona, Calif. last November. Brown's Matco Tools/U.S. Army car shook the tires and slowed to a lap of 4.208 seconds at 203.40 mph to position the 24-time NHRA sixth in the 16-car order.

"That was good to get back in the car and make a run down the race track," Brown said. "We didn't make a full pull, but it was great for the confidence of this Matco Tools team to be back here at the track and get going again. I know we'll make two good runs on Saturday and get in the top half of the field."

Professional nitro qualifying is scheduled for 12:45 and 3:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday with Top Fuel followed by Funny Car.
Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series
GAINESVILLE, Fla. 3-12-2010

Veteran driver Jay Payne raced to the qualifying lead Friday at Gainesville Raceway in the debut of the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series.

Payne, of Ontario, Calif., covered the quarter-mile distance in 5.887 seconds at 241.28 mph in his supercharged 1968 Camaro, which is tuned by Brad Anderson.

Payne, who has 36 career NHRA victories in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car competition, will try to earn his first official Pro Mod victory Sunday when Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals eliminations begin for NHRA’s newest national touring series. Payne has seven wins in NHRA Pro Mod exhibition racing.

“It was absolutely awesome,” Payne said. “There's going to be more rubber on the track tomorrow, which is going to make it better for the guys who run in front of me. If it makes it better for them, it makes it better for us. We just have to make the power to race with them. I really didn't drive it good, but I'm not going to complain because it went real fast. There was room for improvements on my end, because it was dark and I was really amped up.”

Melanie Troxel, who also is competing in Funny Car at this event, was second in her In-N-Out ’63 Corvette with a 5.888 at 236.71. Mike Knowles powered his ’63 Corvette to the third spot with a 5.909 at 244.60.

Qualifying continues Saturday with two sessions for Sunday’s eliminations.

Gainesville Raceway
Gainesville, Fla. (March 12, 2010)

NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series driver Allen Johnson grabbed the No. 12 spot in his Pro Stock Mopar® Dodge Avenger during a rain-shortened qualifying session today at the 41st Annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. The wet weather also postponed the highly anticipated NHRA debut of 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kurt Busch.

Johnson recorded a pass of 6.670/207.62 in the only qualifying session held today due to rainy weather. The Team Mopar driver and Greeneville, Tenn. native will look to improve his position in the final two qualifying sessions tomorrow.

“We didn’t make a very good run at all. We’re still trying to find out why,” said Johnson. “The car was just way off in the 60-foot mark. Hopefully, that’s all it is, and we can fix it and jump right back up there.”

Tomorrow’s qualifying sessions will also mark the postponed elimination rounds of the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Johnson will face Jason Line in the quarterfinals as he attempts to win the Arizona event and claim the Gatornationals No. 1 Qualifier spot.

“We’ve got to correct what happened today, or we won’t be doing that,” said Johnson, who earned a runner-up finish in the 2009 Gatornationals. “I’ve got faith in everybody on my J&J Racing team. We’ll fix it. We’ll go out there tomorrow and run a 6.62, or close to it, in the Mopar Dodge Avenger, move up towards the top and win some rounds.”

Vinnie Deceglie was an impressive No. 4 with a pass of 6.631/207.53 in his Mopar-powered Dodge Stratus in the first round of qualifying. V. Gaines clocked in at No. 21 and will look to crack the Top 16 tomorrow in his Dodge Avenger.

Dodge Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kurt Busch will have to wait to debut his Mopar HEMI®-powered 1970 Dodge Challenger in NHRA Super Gas competition. The No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger driver’s first official run in an NHRA event will take place at the earliest on Sunday after rain washed out Super Gas qualifications yesterday and today and caused saturated conditions in the Sportsman pits.

Michael's last appearance in a Formula BMW race car was at the Okayama International Circuit for Rounds 13 and 14 of the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific series last November, and Michael was anxious to jump back into the race car. He quickly adapted to the Monza track on the first day of testing despite the cold temperatures, which never rose above 39 degrees F. "This is a fast track with long straights and Antonio Ferrari and the Eurointernational crew had my car prepared well so all I had to do was concentrate on hitting my marks and build up to speed," explained Michael. "I enjoyed the experience of testing on the famous Monza track and look forward to coming back here in September for the race. Unfortunately, the second day of the two-day scheduled test was cancelled because of inclement weather."

The Formula BMW Europe series manager made the decision early in the day to cancel the second day of Collective Testing because of the snow. With only one day on the track Michael ran second fastest for a good portion of the morning session, fifth fastest on the time charts during the afternoon, and finished the Collective Test sixth fastest overall of 15 drivers.

"Michael adapted to the track very well for being his first time here," stated Antonio Ferrari, Eurointernational team owner, "and now we head for two days of testing at Barcelona." The next Formula BMW Europe Collective Team Test will be held at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, on March 21 and 22. All three Eurointernational teammates will then compete in Rounds 1 and 2 of the Formula BMW Pacific series, April 2–4, 2010, which runs in conjunction with the Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix on the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur.

During the test, the media took an interest in Michael, who is the only American driving in the Formula BMW Europe series this season, and he was interviewed for Italian television by Roberto Cinquanta of 4:2:2race.

As Michael and the Eurointernational team finalize sponsorship involvement, the Formula BMW race car will soon be painted and all sponsor logos will be added in time for the first race of the Formula BMW Europe season.

Michael Lewis earned the 2009 Formula BMW Americas Rookie Cup and will compete in the 2010 Formula BMW Europe series as a Formula BMW Junior driver for Eurointernational. Rounds 1 and 2 of the Formula BMW Europe series will be May 7–9, 2010, in Barcelona, Spain, in conjunction with the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

Michael and Eurointernational thank the 2010 sponsor team, which includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, SSi Decals, CTECH, Team ASE, Klotz, Earl's Performance Plumbing, Bell Helmets and Subè Sports.

LEVI, RAY & SHOUP NHRA Nitro Funny Car

"Notes & Quotes" from Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang Funny Car, after Friday's rain-delayed single session in Gainesville.

Tim Wilkerson really wanted to make two runs, as scheduled, on Friday. With a new chassis, a new Shelby Mustang body, some new parts, and even a new fire suit, the Levi, Ray & Shoup driver knew his first pass down the Gainesville track would basically be a shakedown run, just to make sure everything was in order and working as it should. Drizzle throughout much of the morning, however, only allowed the pro classes to make one late-afternoon run (and it took a bit of meteorological luck to accomplish that much) so Wilk was faced with making his maiden voyage while still hoping to land in the top 12 after the first day. Both missions were accomplished, as he streaked to a 4.136 to eventually spend Friday night in the No. 7 position.

Wilkerson and the LRS team were actually still sitting in the No. 1 spot with only six cars left to run, but those six drivers were named Hight, Force, Force Hood, Hagan, Capps, and Beckman. As the final three pairs they ran the table, going six-for-six to end the session, knocking Wilkerson back to seventh.

"Not a bad shakedown run, if you ask me," Wilkerson said. "I mean just about everything is new, from the chassis to the body to the rear end and the suit I was wearing. With this new 2010 Shelby Mustang and the new chassis under it, we went from being 60 pounds overweight to having to add 40 pounds to the car just to make weight, but this chassis is really what we're used to running, and if it went out there and ran like it should I figured it would be easier to tune than the last one. It did just what I wanted it to do, so that makes this a very good day.

"It was one of those frustrating days at the track, with the rain coming down for half of it and then even after it stopped it still kept looking like it was going to rain again. I don't think anyone really felt all that confident that we'd get to run, but I might have been the guy wanting to the most. I didn't want to go into Saturday with no runs on this car, knowing we'd have to be right on it from the start just to make the show. At least now we have that first one under our belts and we can go from here. I'm pretty encouraged, to tell you the truth, and hopefully we can step it up a little tomorrow and stay really competitive here."

After a highly competitive ALMS season in 09, Yokohama is partnering with a new team in the GT2 class and is broadening its eco racing program by upgrading its orange oil-infused race tires in the Patrn GT3 Challenge by Yokohama series and the GT Challenge class within ALMS.

Last year at Sebring we introduced our ADVAN® ENV-R1 slick in the GT3 Challenge series, said Mark Chung, Yokohama director, corporate strategy and planning. It was the first environmentally-friendly tire used in any racing series.

This year we'll have a new tire that's not only faster and grips better, but will have even more orange oil and natural rubber in it, further reducing the petroleum use in the tire. The orange oil technology in the original ENV-R1 cut petroleum inputs by 15 percent while performing at the same “ or better “ level as regular racing compounds. We had nothing but positive feedback from Porsche GT3 racers last season, and the new Earth-friendly tire will be even better.

Chung said Yokohama will once again be the spec tire in the Patrn GT3 Challenge by Yokohama series, and will also campaign in the new ALMS GT Challenge (GTC) Class. A field of approximately 10 GTC Class cars will compete at all ALMS events, including endurance races, such as the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans. For details, visit www.imsaracing.net.

The seven-race Patrón GT3 Challenge, which Yokohama is sponsoring for the second straight year, features a fleet of Porsche 911 GT3 race cars competing at leading U.S. tracks, including Sebring, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Road Atlanta. Once again, there will be a field of up to 35 cars vying for championships in two divisions: Platinum (for 2010 GT3 Porsches only) and Gold (2005½ “ 2009 GT3 Porsches). For details, visit www.imsachallenge.com .

The latest news this season in ALMS GT2 is that Yokohama and JaguarRSR are partnering to field a Jaguar XKR entry, which will run on Yokohama ADVAN A005® racing slicks. The No 75 machine will be piloted by Trans-Am racing legend Paul Gentilozzi and sports car veterans Marc Goossens and Ryan Dalziel. They'll be battling against the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Corvette, Viper and Ford.

The nine-race GT2 series travels to many top venues, including Sebring and Road Atlanta, where Yokohama is the Official Tire. For details, visit www.americanlemans.com .

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in the United States, Yokohama Tire Corporation is the North American manufacturing and marketing arm of Tokyo, Japan-based The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., a global manufacturing and sales company of premium tires since 1917.
Servicing a network of more than 4,500 points of sale in the U.S., Yokohama Tire Corporation is a leader in technology and innovation.

Expanding upon 25 years of sportbike dragracing innovation and success on the quarter-mile, Brock's Performance is proud to announce its first roadracing team partnership.

For Team Hooters' GSX-R1000 entry in the 2010 WERA National Endurance Series Heavyweight class, Brock's Performance will supply exquisitely handcrafted CT Dual exhaust systems and high-tech Blackstone Tek (BST) carbon fiber wheels equipped with low-friction Worldwide Bearings ceramic wheel bearings. The team's Middleweight entry, a Yamaha R6, will be fitted with an ultra-light Alien Head exhaust system.

The Brock's Performance CT Series dual exhaust is a high-end, all-titanium, full exhaust system with a carbon fiber endcap that combines state-of-the-art materials and manufacturing techniques with competition-proven performance. The Alien Head exhaust package features lightweight stainless steel headers capped off with a GP-style megaphone muffler finished in a black ceramic thermal coating.

Just 16 pounds per pair, BST's five-spoke wheels feature a trick, single-piece construction. They utilize carbon fiber strands woven in a unidirectional pattern, embedded in a resin matrix, cured in a high-pressure autoclave at 250 degrees and coated with a chemical-resistant, high-gloss finish.

"The Hooters race team always draws a crowd in the paddock and at the many displays they set up at Hooters restaurants across the country," says Brock's Performance president Brock Davidson. "We're proud to be associated with this hard-working team and look forward to a successful 2010 endurance season."

Hooters team owner Steve DeCamp is looking forward to this new partnership: "I've always admired Brock's skills as an engine builder, racer and businessman. I'm glad to see the growth of his company and am excited to be part of its move into roadracing."

In addition to the Team Hooters roadrace support, other Brock's Performance- and BST-sponsored riders include nine-time AMA national dragracing champion Rickey Gadson heading up the quarter-mile assault. On the tuck-in-and-gas-it front, land-speed record holders John Noonan and Leslie Porterfield, motorcycling's fastest man and woman, and many other top-speed demons, also roll on BST rims.

The eight-race, 2010 WERA National Endurance series kicks off with a four-hour event this weekend at Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, Georgia. Tim Hunt and Skip Selenius will share Team Hooters' Heavyweight-class riding chores, while James Rispoli and Tim Birdsong will man the team's R6 in the Middleweight division.

With nearly 200 national event and divisional wins to his credit, Manzo would like nothing more than to duplicate his 2009 performance in the NHRA Lucas Oil Sportsman Drag Racing Series that saw the veteran driver from Morganville, New Jersey rack up five national and five divisional event wins – a perfect season by all accounts – to clinch his 13th Top Alcohol Funny Car championship more than two months before the season had even ended. Doing so, however, will be a tough task.

“Of course, we would like nothing more than to see the same level of success this year as we have in years past,” said Manzo, checking in from the pits of Gainesville Raceway. “It’s no easy task, though. There are a lot of great teams out here in this Top Alcohol Funny Car category and it’s going to be a challenge from the very beginning, but we really wouldn’t have it any other way. The competition, the challenge – that’s what motivates me.”

For a driver who has seen the degree of on-track success that Manzo has over the course of his drag racing career, one that spans more than three decades, it surely isn’t a desire to collect trophies that has driven him to this point.

“I think the bottom line is that I love to do this,” Manzo said. “All my life I’ve been inside a race car and while I’m thankful for all that we’ve achieved, I’ve never been satisfied. Each year I set the bar a little higher, challenge myself a little bit more.”

Never one to look back and bask in the glory of his accomplishments, Manzo maintains a sharp focus on the challenges that lie ahead.

“The points system works the same every year; we all start off at zero. All you can say is, ‘Here we go again’ and hope to do well. Sure, it’s going to be bumpy at times, but we’ll go out there and do the best we can to win every round of racing we enter into.”

Beyond the historical significance of a potential 14th championship season, a great deal of anticipation stems from Manzo’s first event with the Al-Anabi Racing Group.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to race under the Al-Anabi banner for Sheikh Khalid and the State of Qatar and represent them in the Top Alcohol Funny Car division,” said Manzo. “We’ve spent the last few days shaking down our brand new Murf McKinney race car at West Palm Beach International Raceway here in Florida, made a few runs and did fairly well. We’d like nothing more than to go out and earn a win for Sheikh Khalid and send a trophy to him in Qatar.”

The Al-Anabi Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car team will hit the track tomorrow, Friday, March 12th, starting with the opening two rounds of qualifying for the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals, with a final session slated for Saturday afternoon and Round 1 of eliminations that evening. Final eliminations will get underway on Sunday the 14th at 11:00 AM.
I R C : Rallye Argentina

For practically three decades, Argentina has stood out as a favourite venue for rallying’s top names. Following their recent – and successful – trip to Brazil, the Ontercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and Peugeot could hardly skip over the opportunity to extend their South American stay by adding a visit to the spectacular gravel stages of Argentina’s Cordoba region to their respective calendars.

A different rally :

It was less than a fortnight ago that the IRC’s defending champions Kris Meeke and Peugeot claimed their first win of the 2010 campaign in Brazil. The majority of the crews and mechanics returned to Europe after that event, but the cars and spares embarked directly on the 2.200 km road journey south to Villa Carlos Paz, the holiday resort that sits at the southern tip Lago da Roque, and traditional home to the Rallye Argentina.

Unlike my rivals, I had prior knowledge of the terrain in Brazil, » admits Kris Meeke. « In Argentina, the situation will be reversed since some of the drivers have already competed there, whereas I have only done the recce for the event…once. » That was back in 2005, but it does still mean that the Briton has a certain inderstanding of the lie of the land. The Argentine stages are much harder-packed and rougher, and are often very rutted, too, which is pretty punishing for the wheels and suspension.

There are also quite a few water spashes.

The word from Villa Carlos Paz is that it has rained quite heavily in recent months, and certain dirt roads are in a poorer state thane ver. And despite the fact that the organisers have widely chosen not to include the famous Giulio Cesare and El Condor stages, which have produced very high attrition rates over the years, competitors still face an extremely

hard challenge, including the equally celebrated La Cumbre-Agua de Oro and Ascocinga-La Cumbre tests. Because of fog and low-lying cloud, hazards often seem to jump out at the drivers from nowhere, and Peugeot Sport is recommending a specific set-up for the different teams who are running 207 Super 2000s on the South American event.

The Argentine stages are far twistier and also put the emphasis on vertical suspension movement, » onbserves Bertrad Vallat, the engineer in charge of developing the 207 Super 2000. « This means we need to optimise the car’s shocks absorbing ability, but without that having an adverse effect on its balance. The surface also tends to cup up between runs, so that’s another problem we will need to take onboard ; the teams will have to adjust their settings – and even ride-height – accordingly. Last but not least, we need to prepare for the many water splashes, too.

There are effectively a high number of fords in the Santa Rosa de Calamuchita region, which is some 100 km south of Villa Carlos Paz and the epicentre of the opening day’s action.

The main thing is to ensure that the engine and especially the electronis are shielded from the water. This is never an exact science ; we just have to take all the steps we can…

Kris Meeke will be joined in the Peugeot camp by Portuguese driver Bruno Magalhaès and Brazil’s Daniel Oliveira who will both also be contesting the event in a 207 Super 2000.

The Brazilian round gave me a chance to find my marks again on the loose and also adapt the set-up of my Peugeot to my driving style, » says Magalhaès. « I am targeting a top result.

Meanwhile, Kris Meeke has every intention of adding a further win to his record in Argentina where his maturity and experience promise to be excellent assets : « It’s a rally that will call for a carefully thougt-through, cautious and well-paced approach because the total stage distance is much longer than i twas in Brazil.

Sam Michael, Technical Director
“It was a very busy day with the usual teething problems. We lost some track time due to an electrics problem in the garage in the morning and we also had minor technical issues to resolve on the cars. We then had a much more productive afternoon looking at race set-ups and qualifying preparation. We have more work to do, but nothing that looks unachievable. It has been a marathon effort from everyone at Williams and Cosworth to get us to this stage and soon the hard work will start to pay off.

Nico Hulkenberg
“It’s still very difficult to form a picture of where everyone is at competitively, but I am satisfied that we had a relatively good day today and managed to compete everything we set out to do. The ambition remains the same, to make sure we get through to Q3 and to finish the weekend with some points.”

Rubens Barrichello
“Because we had some minor issues in the garage today, we didn’t get as much track time as we wanted. We didn’t manage to finish our programme, but I am confident tomorrow will be a better day and we will catch up on the lost time. There has been an enormous amount of work and effort from everyone at Williams to get this far, which deserves my thanks.”

With only hours to go until the first race of the 2010 Formula One season, Red Bull Racing is pleased to announce that Singha Beer has increased its commitment to the team, stepping up from Team Supplier to Team Partner for 2010.

The augmented deal means Singha Beer will gain greater visibility on team assets, most notably on the cockpit of the RB6, as well as on other Partner listing areas. It will also continue to support the team’s VIP guest hospitality programmes, as it has done for the last two seasons.

The international appeal of Formula One will be a useful tool for Singha Beer, as it aims to capitalise on the sport’s wide appeal and increase its presence as a globally recognised premium beer brand. Singha Beer is currently available in over 44 countries worldwide.

“It’s great news that Singha Beer has reconfirmed and increased its commitment to Red Bull Racing for the coming season”, said team principal Christian Horner. “There is strong synergy between the two brands due to their similar Thai origins; the Thai background of Singha Beer fits well with the strong Thai roots of Red Bull. We’re delighted to welcome Singha Beer as a Team Partner and we look forward to working with them throughout our 2010 Championship campaign.”

“Through this global partnership with Red Bull Racing, Singha Corporation aims to promote Formula One in Thailand and the Singha brand globally,” said Voravud Bhirombhakdi, Strategic Partnership and Event Department, 4th Generation Bhirombhakdi family of Singha Corporation Thailand. “We are confident that this is the beginning of an exciting, successful and synergized partnership between Red Bull Racing and Singha for years to come. We partnered the team in 2009 for the Japanese GP, which resulted in a victory, and we are pleased to partner the team for a whole season. We are confident that the 2010 season will be a victorious one.”
“We are reasonably pleased with the work done today. We had a very busy programme and we got through just about all of it: the only problem was a loss of air from a tyre on Alonso’s car which interrupted his long run. We picked up a lot of data which we will use to decide on set-up and strategy for the rest of the weekend. It’s hard to say where we are compared to the other teams in terms of performance and we will only find that out tomorrow afternoon. The new part of the circuit is rather narrow and at some points the surface is very bumpy, but it does not present any particular problems for the car.”

First session: air 29/31 °C, track 37/42 °C; sunny.
Second session: air 33 °C, track 47/46 °C; sunny.

After winter testing featured rain and below average temperatures, the first round of the World Championship, which got underway today at Sakhir, took place in hot and sunny conditions. Therefore, the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro work programme over the three hours of free practice, focussed almost entirely on assessing the behaviour of the F10 and the two types of tyre brought here by Bridgestone, in conditions very different to those experienced during the fifteen days of testing. “We had set ourselves an agenda based on preparation for Sunday’s race and we are pleased with what we have seen so far,” commented Stefano Domenicali. “Even more so than in the past, it is difficult to get an idea of the pecking order on Friday, because the fuel levels of the cars during these three hours of running can vary quite considerably. Now, we must try and prepare as well as possible for tomorrow’s qualifying, which will be difficult and closely contested for a variety of reasons, without losing sight of the fact that the points are only handed out on Sunday afternoon.”

Fernando Alonso:
“A slightly different Friday to usual for me, as it was the first one with my new team. We concentrated mainly on comparing the two types of tyre, so as to be as well prepared as possible for the race on Sunday, trying to get a car that performs consistently over a long run. Obviously, with such high temperatures, tyre degradation was more rapid, especially with the rears. From what we could see, the indications we got from testing have been confirmed, with four teams that you could describe as favourites, although there could yet be a few surprises, Force India for example. The new track is not bad: it is fun, even if there are a few too many bumps which I hadn’t spotted when I inspected it by bicycle.”

Felipe Massa:
“We worked a lot on finding the right balance on the car in race trim and on comparing the two types of tyre, running with various fuel levels, although never going for a quick time. I am quite happy with what we have seen today, even if it is difficult to get an accurate picture of how competitive we are compared to the others. We will definitely face stiff competition from many teams, but we were preparing as well as possible for Sunday’s race and tomorrow morning, we will work on qualifying. I’ve got a bit of a temperature today, but I feel 100% for this start to the season.”
“Not such a good day and not enough mileage. We missed out a bit this afternoon; I had a gearbox problem, so the team made a precautionary stop with the car which ended P2 early. We’ll have to regroup and get what we can out of today – we’ll be focusing on qualifying in tomorrow’s practice. We still learnt some stuff today and Seb looked at the tyres.

You can already see that it’s going to be bloody competitive this year, it’s going to be a good fight out there.” “So, the first day of the first race. Unfortunately we didn’t get a lot of running today. The track was still green this morning, so everyone was just checking their cars. In the second practice I had to have the brakes changed and Mark couldn’t do the whole session, so it wasn’t ideal. I would have liked more track time, but it’s not Christmas and we’re not given things for free. We have a lot of work to do, but we know where we need to improve, so we will work on that.”

It's all change in Formula One this year, with a new FIA President, new teams; a new era. That got us to thinking what would happen if some other people got a chance to run the show - starting with:

IF F1 WAS RULED BY… WOMEN
1. There would be a woman driver in F1. In fact, they’d all be women.
2. No grid girls – only grid boys, in short shorts – and only if they look like Brad.
3. Every circuit would have proper toilets, ones with decent mirrors, proper hand towels and perfume.
4. F1 wouldn’t have an unwritten rule which insists women can only work in marketing and hospitality.
5. F1 wouldn’t race in industrial wastelands and urban no-go areas. Instead we’d have the Seychelles Grand Prix, the Parisian Grand Prix and Fuji would have never got a look on over Fiji.
6. It’s a well known fact that women are better at multi-tasking, so if women ran F1 decisions would be made quickly and they’d be sensible.
7. F1 would have better communication. Women are much better at talking than men and they’d teach drivers to talk openly about their emotions. The phrases ‘for sure’ and ‘obviously’ would never feature in a press conference again.
8. F1 would be better dressed. Swipe gates would be manned by fashion police rather than security and journalists would have to display designer labels rather than a permanent pass. Chanel would sponsor everything.
PS: 9. If women ran F1, there would never be any races, as no-one would be able to decide whether those Giuseppe Zanotti shoes clash with the Stella McCartney uniform and does the colour match the car’s livery?
