WKA And SFI Expand Technical Inspector Certification Program, 2- and 4-Cycle

WKA provides training and certification for 4-cycle Technical Inspectors to ensure fair, consistent, high quality pre and post race technical inspection. Certified inspectors are required at all National and Divisional Dirt, Pavement and Gold Cup Series events.

During the 2006 season, WKA partnered with SFI to enhance the 4-cycle Technical Inspector Certification Program. Under this program, WKA continued to provide training, administer the examinations, and make the final decisions regarding certification. SFI developed and scored the examinations and maintains a database of certified inspectors. Under this program, WKA certified four Level 3, twenty Level 2, and fifty-three Level 1 inspectors in 2006. Level 1 inspectors are certified to conduct technical inspection at local events and assist at divisional events under the supervision of a divisional inspector. Level 2 inspectors are certified to conduct technical inspection at divisional and local events. Level 3 inspectors are certified to inspect at national, divisional, and local events. And just because some inspectors only work at local track or events, they should not be discouraged from reaching for higher levels of certification. Achieving the higher level will recognize their knowledge and experience no matter where they work. It will also put them in SFI’s tech inspector data base and makes them available if someone is needed on an emergency basis at a higher level event. Response to the new program has been very positive, but there continues to be a need for qualified inspectors at all levels and in all series. As a result, WKA is expanding this successful program to include certification for 2-cycle Tech Inspectors. In addition, WKA is increasing the requirements to qualify for higher certification levels. Requirements for Certification To achieve Level 1 certification, candidates must meet the following requirements: - Be a WKA member in good standing (may join at the seminar) - Complete application including references and inspector and/or engine building experience - Attend a 4-cycle or 2-cycle Tech Inspector Seminar - Take and pass the one hour open book examination To achieve or advance to Level 2 or level 3 certification candidates must meet the same requirement as Level 1 candidates and demonstrate: - The ability to successfully completing a full tech inspection of the engines most commonly run in 2-cycle and 4-cycle series - The ability to deal courteously and fairly and firmly with competitors - An understanding of the inspection, protest, and appeal processes 2-cycle Tech Inspector Training The 2-cycle Tech Seminars and examinations are scheduled for the following locations: February 24 - KMI Show - Schaumburg, IL (Near O’Hare airport) March 8 - Jacksonville, FL (First Manufacturer’s Cup event) 4-cycle Tech Inspector Training The 4-cycle Tech Seminars and examinations are scheduled for the following locations: February 25, 2007 - KMI Show - Schaumburg, IL (Near O’Hare airport) April 12 - Daytona Beach, FL (First Gold Cup event) Note: The February 24 and 25 seminars at the KMI show will be the only opportunity to attend seminars and take the examinations for both 2-cycle and 4-cycle certification in the same location and at the same time. The cost of the seminars is $100.00 and includes the examination. Certification is good for two years. Register for these seminars by contacting Amanda Gaunder at 704-455-1616, or via email
