Infineon Raceway Weekly program designed to keep Drag Racing off the Streets and on the Drag Strip
The popular Wednesday Night Drags program kicks off its 22nd consecutive year at Infineon Raceway on Wednesday, March 10. OBJECTIVE To create a safe, legal and controlled environment for people, from teen-agers to senior citizens, to drag race their vehicles. WHEN Most Wednesday nights from March 10 – Nov. 10. Gates open at 3:30 p.m., racing spans from 5 p.m. -10 p.m. Infineon Raceway, Highways 37 and 121, Sonoma, Calif., 95476. WHO Anyone with a driver’s license can compete, providing their vehicle or motorcycle passes a simple technical inspection. The event attracts a varied crowd, including teens, mothers, working professionals and grandparents racing everything from Corvettes to mini-vans. Three-hundred cars are allowed to compete each Wednesday night. The weekly event attracts an average of 900-1,200 people (competitors and spectators). Georgia Seipel (San Leandro, Drag strip manager): San Leandro resident Georgia Seipel started the Wednesday Night Drags program at Infineon Raceway more than 20 years ago. A former drag racer, she worked at Baylands Raceway Park in Fremont for 10 years before coming to Sonoma in 1988. Seipel drag raced for 10 years before dedicating herself solely to drag strip manager. Her husband, Ted, and son, Kyle, continue to race competitively. Seipel is also a breast cancer survivor. Doug Sabiston (Moraga): In the past two decades, 89-year-old Doug Sabiston of Moraga has discovered his need for speed. Sabiston, a retired statistics instructor of more than 25 years at Contra Costa College, discovered the Wednesday Night Drags nearly 20 years ago and has been racing in Sonoma ever since. Sabiston previously raced his 1973 Charger, and is currently racing his 2005 Buick Lacrosse. Sabiston’s other passions have included mountaineering, about which he has written two books.
